What Is SPAID?
SPAID stands for either Split Path Acceleration of Independent Data Streams or Split Path Architecture for Intelligent Devices - both are correct and both refer to the same basic concept. It is an architecture used in intelligent storage network switches and appliances to apply advanced storage management applications to multiple data paths. SPAID solutions combine semiconductors (ASICs) and software to separate the control path from the data path, and to perform key storage services at the network level.
SPAID is similar in concept to multi-processor servers, where processing requests are split among several CPUs to execute tasks in parallel, thus achieving higher performance. However, much like MP servers, applications must be written to take advantage of the multi-threaded architecture.
Why Is SPAID Important?
SPAID allows advanced storage services (e.g., volume management, data snapshots, data replication, data mirroring) to be deployed within a storage network fabric. By residing within the fabric, these functions can be applied to all the data contained within the storage network, regardless of the servers, operating systems, connectivity protocols and storage devices in use.
In addition, by distributing SPAID processing across the individual ports within an intelligent switch, SPAID eliminates potential bottlenecks while enhancing the performance, scalability, reliability and serviceability of the storage network.
Which Applications Are Optimized For SPAID?
In order to take advantage of SPAID, applications must be architected and written to leverage the hardware separation and acceleration. This changeover is similar to the evolution of multi-CPU servers, where software had to be rewritten to accommodate the architectural change from single-threaded designs to parallel architectures. storage is the only company in the industry currently shipping a Split-Path, SPAID-Optimized storage Services solution.
Can I Implement SPAID Today?
Yes. SPAID-optimized solutions are available today from storage, and can be seamlessly added to either new or existing storage networks.
storage, through the storage Enabled partner program works with leading storage vendors to combine its SPAID-optimized storage services with SPAID platforms. Today, a comprehensive suite of SPAID solutions compatible with a wide range of servers, operating systems and storage devices are available through partners such as Troika Networks. These solutions include:
- Centralized volume management
- Synchronous and asynchronous mirroring
